  • Your GPS position is not stored anywhere off your phone: Visto has no server of its own.

  • Map, terrain and photo requests go to services run by others, and carry coordinates and your IP address.
  • Places and terrain you have downloaded are stored on your phone only.

What the app does with data

labels what you see in your camera view. To do that it uses your location, the camera and the motion sensors. Your GPS position is not stored anywhere off your phone: has no server of its own and receives nothing from you. The camera image is processed on the phone and never sent anywhere.

Services the app asks

To load map data, the app sends requests to services run by others. The first map request asks for the area around you, so its box is centred on your position. Map, terrain and photo requests carry coordinates (yours or a place's) and, like any request on the internet, your IP address:

  • Overpass API (OpenStreetMap data) – the places around you: peaks, lakes, towns and so on. The app asks these servers, run by others, one after another: overpass.openstreetmap.fr, overpass-api.de (with its lz4. and z. mirrors), maps.mail.ru (VK, Russia) and overpass.private.coffee.
  • AWS Terrarium (Amazon Web Services) – terrain height tiles, to know which places are hidden behind a ridge.
  • Wikimedia – photos and facts about a place, when you open its card: commons.wikimedia.org, upload.wikimedia.org (the images), wikidata.org and, for places stored by older versions of the app, the Wikipedia API.

Other apps and stores

  • Navigate: on iPhone the app hands your position (as the start of the route) and the place to your navigation app, Apple Maps or the one you chose; on Android it hands only the place to your default map app. That app's own privacy policy applies.
  • iPhone: the map and place search in the offline-area picker are Apple Maps; Apple's privacy policy applies.
  • Android: the area picker uses OpenFreeMap (map tiles) and Nominatim (search). also uses Google Play Services for AR (ARCore), provided by Google and governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Tips: if you leave a tip, the payment is processed by Apple or Google. does not see your payment details.

Places and terrain you have downloaded are stored on your phone only; you can delete them in the app.

What the app does not do
